BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:05 A.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) is rolling through the Palmyra countryside, liberating several sites a day from the Islamic State (ISIS) forces.
Backed by heavy Russian airstrikes, the Syrian Arab Army’s 5th Legion stormed the Wadi Al-Ahmar area located in Palmyra’s eastern countryside, where they confronted by a large Islamic State force.
An intense battle insued for hours at Wadi Al-Ahmar before the Islamic State forces finally withdrew east towards the Mustardah Gas Fields.
Located 6km east of the recently liberated Palmyra Silos, the Wadi Al-Ahmar area is imperative to securing the eastern sector of teh city and military airport.
In the coming days, the Syrian Arab Army will likely make two important advances: 1) towards the Talilah Crossroad and 2) towards the ‘Arak Gas Fields.
The ‘Arak Gas Fields are incredibly important to the Syrian Arab Army, as they are located along the Palmyra-Sukhnah Road, which is one of the Islamic State’s key supply routes in the area.
