Damascus, Syria (9:30 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army’s Republican Guard, backed by the National Defense Forces (NDF) and 4th Mechanized Division, continued their large-scale advance in the key town of Darayya on Wednesday, capturing more building blocks near the Noureddeen Mosque.

An officer from the Syrian Arab Army in Darayya told Al-Masdar on Wednesday night that their forces managed to seized a significant chunk of territory around the Noureeddeen Mosque, estimating the captured land to be around 450 square meters.

As a result of this major advance in Darayya, the Syrian Armed Forces have managed to push their way to the Railway area of the town, which has been under the control of the Islamist rebels since 2012.

Large advance? The article says 450 m2! That’s like 5 decent-sized apartments.

450 square meters is about 20×20 meters. One or two houses. Not a very large advance.

The Darayya saga continues into 6th year. This explains some of the shortcomings of SAA, who is battling about 500 militants, who have been under siege for several years. In addition, Damascus, city of 2 million people is about 10 miles away, so the fact SAA cannot muster several thousand men, and run Darayya over in 2 days is a very horrible sign. More men will die this way, where you advance 100 m at a time, giving enemy time to dig in every time.

This author should adjust his vocabulary and stop with the “large scale”, “massive”, “impressive” and similar adjectives that have no corroboration in reality. Large scale is what Soviet, Germans, Americans did in WW2 when they conquer 100 km of front depth in 2 days in large operations and manouvers. This conquest of somebody’s back yard considered large scale sounds really out of place. And pictures of soldiers sitting in armchairs and pointing their guns through the wall openings while there is a table with coffee, tea, sweets served in porcelain set shows how seriously the army there approaches the war… Read more »
