DAMASCUS, SYRIA (1:15 A.M.) – Syrian Arab Army (SAA) successfully liberated Thawrah oil field in southwestern Raqqa countryside having expelled militants of the so-called “Islamic State” from this site after violent clashes.
SAA’s elite Tiger Forces division resumed its offensive in the region on Wednesday striking IS positions at both Thawrah and Sfayeh oil fields that are located along the Salamiyah-Raqqa Highway.
This successful assault comes as a logical continuation of the major operation launched by government forces three days ago, during which Syrian Army had seized more than 15 villages from IS effectively reaching the aforementioned highway.
With Thawrah oil field recaptured from jihadists, SAA can now establish fortified positions along the highway and prepare a springboard to continue offensive to the northeast, towards Raqqa city, or to the southwest, towards Ithriyah town.
The latter manouevre, if chosen by SAA, will lead to encirclement of IS forces in rather large pocket southeast of Khanasser town.
