The Russian Minister of Defense, General Sergey Shoygu, issued a statement on Wednesday morning that addressed the overall success of the Russian military operations in Syria.

“The Syrian Army has managed to liberate 500 towns and 10,000 square km of territory from the terrorist forces inside the country,” General Shoygu added.

Addressing the topic of ISIS’ oil supply routes, General Shoygu stated that Russia is actively targeting the terrorist group’s economic sources in Syria.

General Shoygu also cautioned the critics that wanted to see the Syrian President, Bashar Al-Assad, be removed from office.

He stressed that the overthrowing Mu’ammar Al-Gaddafi in Libya and Saddam Hussein in Iraq did not stop the spread of terrorism, but rather, helped fuel the rise of extremism.

“We cannot be sure that the departure of Bashar Al-Assad will lead to a decline in terrorism,” he concluded.

Please treat this discussion with the same respect you would a public park. We, too, are a shared community resource — a place to share skills, knowledge and interests through ongoing conversation.

These are not hard and fast rules, merely guidelines to aid the human judgment of our community and keep this a clean and well-lighted place for civilized public discourse.

Improve the Discussion

Help us make this a great place for discussion by always working to improve the discussion in some way, however small. If you are not sure your post adds to the conversation, think over what you want to say and try again later.

Be Agreeable, Even When You Disagree

You may wish to respond to something by disagreeing with it. That’s fine. But remember to criticize ideas, not people. Please avoid:

  • Name-calling
  • Ad hominem attacks
  • Responding to a post’s tone instead of its actual content
  • Knee-jerk contradiction

Instead, provide reasoned counter-arguments that improve the conversation.

If you’ve followed the maps since sept 2015, it’s really around it. The shrinking of rebel+ISIS territories is absolutely noticeable.
