The Syrian Arab Army’s 5th Armored Division has continued their offensive operations inside the Dara’a Governorate on Wednesday, launching a large-scale offensive at the strategic town of ‘Itman in order to reopen the large roadway that stretches from Sheikh Miskeen to the provincial capital.

The 5th Armored Division – backed by the National Defense Forces (NDF), 7th Mechanized Division, and the Palestine Liberation Army (PLA) – launched the offensive from their positions at the southern perimeter of ‘Itman, where they were able to break-through the Islamist rebel defenses and enter the Aswad District.

Following their entry into the Aswad District of ‘Itman, the Syrian Armed Forces were able to secure as many as 25 buildings and 4 building blocks after a violent battle with the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) and the Free Syrian Army’s “Southern Front Brigades”.

Currently, the Syrian Armed Forces and the Islamist rebels are still fighting inside the Aswad District of ‘Itman; this will be the most critical battle in the coming days due to its proximity to the provincial capital.

Should the Syrian Armed Forces seize ‘Itman from the Islamist rebels, they will have effectively wedged them between the aforementioned town and ‘Ibta, which sits just south of the recently captured city of Sheikh Miskeen.
