BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:45 P.M.) – The Islamic State (ISIS) launched a surprise offensive in the southwestern countryside of Aleppo on Thursday, targeting the Syrian government’s only supply route to the province.
ISIS began the assault by seizing several villages near Umm Mayal on Thursday morning; this paved the way for their swift advance to the Khanasser Road, which was under the Syrian Arab Army’s control at the time.
Within minutes of reaching the Khanasser Road, the Islamic State militants imposed fire control over the area, blocking the Syrian government’s only supply route to the Aleppo Governorate.
The Syrian Arab Army’s Republican Guard forces would regroup by noon on Thursday and launch a powerful counter-assault to reclaim the ground they lost to the Islamic State terrorists earlier in the day.
The situation in the Khanasser Plain of southeast Aleppo would return to normal on Thursday night, as the remaining Islamic State terrorists retreated towards the Maskanah Plains near the Al-Raqqa Governorate border.
