BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:45 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) confronted a group of jihadist rebels on Tuesday that attempted to attack their positions in the southeastern countryside of the Idlib Governorate.
According to a field report from the Idlib Governorate, the jihadist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) attacked the Syrian Arab Army’s positions in the Saraqib countryside, as they attempted to infiltrate into the town of of Afs, which also has a presence of Russian military police.
The report said the Syrian Arab Army was able to defeat the infiltration attempt by Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham, ultimately forcing them to withdraw to their previous lines after suffering heavy casualties at the hands of the SAA.
This latest attack comes at a time when the towns of Al-Fateera, Kansafra and Sufouhn in the Jabal Al-Zawiya countryside of Idlib witness intense attacks by the jihadist rebels, including Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham and Turkish-backed militant groups.
Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham is one of the largest jihadist groups inside Syria; they are primarily based in the Idlib Governorate, but they also maintain a large presence in the Latakia, Hama and Latakia governorates of northwestern Syria.
