DAMASCUS, SYRIA (7:35 A.M.) – Jaysh Al-Islam (Army of Islam) launched a powerful counter-offensive in the East Ghouta region of rural Damascus on Tuesday, targeting the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) positions near the key village of Mayda’a.

The Islamist rebel group began the offensive by storming the Syrian Arab Army’s defenses inside of Mayda’a on Tuesday afternoon; this resulted in a series of fierce clashes that lasted for several hours.

Following their three attempts to breach the Syrian Arab Army’s front-lines, Jaysh Al-Islam finally withdrew their assault, retiring to the outskirts of this key village in rural Damascus.

According to an Al-Masdar field correspondent in Damascus, the Syrian Arab Army managed to reverse any gains made by Jaysh Al-Islam, capturing two buildings east of Mayda’a.

Jaysh Al-Islam claimed that their forces killed over 30 Syrian Arab Army soldiers and destroyed 4 armored vehicles before retreating from Mayda’a; however, this report proved untrue, as the High Command of the Syrian Armed Forces informed Al-Masdar that the SAA only lost 2 soldiers as a result of a roadside bomb.
