DAMASCUS, SYRIA (8:20 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army’s 4th and 7th divisions launched a massive offensive inside the West Ghouta region of rural Damascus this weekend, targeting the key town of Deir Khabiyeh at the outskirts of Khan Al-Sheih.

In a matter of 24 hours, the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th and 7th divisions managed to capture more than 10km of farmland around Deir Khabiyeh, paving the way for their first attempt at recapturing this rural town at the southwestern outskirts of Damascus City.

According to an Al-Masdar correspondent in Damascus, the Syrian Armed Forces have officially entered Deir Khabiyeh after a fierce battle at the town’s outskirts for several hours today.

The Syrian Arab Army’s 42nd Brigade of the 4th Mechanized Division that is leading this assault at Deir Khabiyeh is the same unit that led the attack on Darayya last month; they are considered one of the government’s most experienced forces.
