BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:55 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) continued their wide-scale assault against the Islamic State (ISIS) forces in the western countryside of Palmyra on Thursday, targeting the Jihar Gas Fields after a successful advance earlier this week.
Led by the 5th Legion and 18th Tank Division, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) reportedly entered the Jihar Gas Fields for the first time in weeks after overrunning the Islamic State’s first line of defense earlier today.
While they still haven’t taken control of this site, reports indicate that the Syrian Arab Army is currently fighting the remaining Islamic State terrorists inside the Jihar Gas Fields.
Meanwhile, at the nearby Hayyan Gas Fields, the Islamic State forces were able to seize some wells after the initial Syrian Arab Army attack forced them to flee the Gas Company site in order to avoid being overrun.
Intense clashes are still ongoing at several axes in the western countryside of Palmyra, including the eastern groves of Al-Bayarat, where the Islamic State is attempting to thwart the Syrian Army’s advance towards the ancient city.
