Moments ago in the Dara’a Governorate’s northern countryside, the Syrian Arab Army’s 15th Brigade of the 5th Armored Division – in close coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) and the 7th Mechanized Division – imposed full control over the Al-‘Umari Mosque inside the west district of Sheikh Miskeen after a violent battle with the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) this morning.

According to a military source at the 5th Division’s headquarters in the city of Izra’a, the Syrian Armed Forces are very close to capturing the entire city of Sheikh Miskeen; however, they are still involved in a heated battle in the Al-Diri District.

The city of Sheikh Miskeen was captured by the Islamist rebels of the Free Syrian Army and Jabhat Al-Nusra in the Spring of 2014 after a failed offensive by the Syrian Arab Army’s 5th Armored Division paved the way for the opposition groups to seize the remaining territory they controlled.

Should the Syrian Armed Forces capture Sheikh Miskeen in the coming days, they will have access to the large city of Nawa and the strategic villages of ‘Ibta and Da’el; these aforementioned sites are the gateway to the Al-Quneitra Governorate.
