On Tuesday afternoon, the 106th Brigade of the Republican Guard went on the offensive on the outskirts of the Syrian capital as government forces attempted to establish a buffer-zone on the eastern flank of the M1-Highway between Harasta and Douma.

With several armored vehicles plowing through territory held by Jaish al-Islam at full throttle, scores of Islamist combattants were scattered by the surprise attack, thereby forcing them to abandon their positions and flee towards the Islamist bastion of Douma.

As infantry units subsequently poured in to reinforce the attack, government troops were able to capture and hold a couple of trenches and tunnels at the Aaliyah farms and Karm Al-Rasas farms without losing a single Syrian soldier in the process.

Meanwhile, the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) tanks and BMP’s which had spearheaded the attack took a sharp turn after the initial thrust and began gunning down the retreating Jaish al-Islam militants.

The military source debriefing Al-Masdar News about the raid was unable to precisely determine the jihadist death toll due to Islamist fighters retrieving some of their injured comrades but insisted Jaish al-Islam had suffered roughly 10 casualties. In addition, the source confirmed a bulldozer had been destroyed while digging trenches in the area.

With several other attacks occuring in the region over the past 24 hours, the SAA seems determined to tighten the noose around the rebel pocket. This should in turn force local insurgent factions to accept unfavorable evacuation terms which would have Islamist factions surrender their last areas near the Syrian capital.

On a separate frontline in the East Ghouta, Jaish al-Islam claimed its fighters had repelled a persistent SAA attack and killed several government soldiers whose identification cards where posted online as show of proof.
