Local sources in the Dara’a Governorate are reporting the Syrian Arab Army’s capture of ‘Itman after a brief battle with the Islamist rebels of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group).
Both pro and anti-government social media activists have reported the withdrawal of the Islamist rebels to the nearby town of Da’el, marking what would be the second major defeat for the latter in the Dara’a Governorate in only three weeks.
Yesterday, the Syrian Arab Army’s 5th Armored Division – in close coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF), the Palestine Liberation Army (PLA), and the 7th Mechanized Division – imposed full control over several building blocks inside of ‘Itman, while also seizing the Cable Factory and the ‘Itman Post Office after a bloody battle with the Islamist rebels.
If the town of ‘Itman did fall to the Syrian Armed Forces this morning, then the Islamist rebels will be in serious trouble along the main roadway from Sheikhk Miskeen to the provincial capital.
The loss of ‘Itman would leave the Islamist rebels trapped at the strategic towns of Da’el and ‘Ibta; it would only be a matter of time before they would concede these sites to the Syrian Armed Forces.
