BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:55 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) resumed their military operations in the western countryside of Al-Raqqa, Sunday, targeting the Islamic State’s (ISIL) defenses along the strategic Ithriya-Resafa Highway.
Led by their elite Tiger Forces, the Syrian Arab Army attacked the Islamic State’s positions at the large hilltop of Tal SyriaTel and its corresponding checkpoint.
Not long after launching their attack, the Syrian Arab Army announced they had full control of Tal SyriaTel and its checkpoint, closing-in on the Islamic State’s last points along the Ithriya-Resafa Highway.
According to Al-Masdar’s Ibrahim Joudeh, the Syrian Army is now 15km away from the Resafa axis, which means they are on the verge of expelling the terrorist forces from the entire highway.
Without access to this highway, the Islamic State will be trapped in the Khanasser Plain of east Aleppo; however, they will likely remove their forces before any siege begins.
