Despite reports of the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) next goal to be as-Sukhnah en route to Deir Ezzor, a military source has notified al-Masdar that government troops are assembling to capture the villages of al-Busairi and Khunayfis instead; they are geographically placed east of al-Qaryatayn and south of Palmyra.
If the SAA is able to capture al-Busairi and Khunayfis, they will not seize several large oil fields, but also secure the area between Qaryatayn and Palmyra from hostile ISIS jihadists. Also, this would have ISIS pressured financially while the Syrian government can empower its military and prevent future fuel shortages.
Furthermore, the capture of these sites would prevent any potential obstacles in the coming as-Sukhnah offensive, as such a manuever would safeguard the right flank along the Homs-Palmyra-Sukhnah M7-Highway.
Corresponding with the intel, joint forces of the Syrian Air Force and Russian Air Force have begun to target this area as of yesterday. However, the offensive towards al-Busairi and Khunayfis will be first be launched next week, as government troops are regrouping and preparing the future tactical advances in the region.
