BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:40 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) swiftly advanced in the western countryside of Palmyra yesterday, liberating large swathes of territory from the Islamic State (ISIS) forces along the Homs-Palmyra Highway.
Led by the 5th Legion and 18th Tank Division, the Syrian Arab Army liberated the Hayyan Gas Company, Western Al-Bayarat area, and several hilltops after overrunning the Islamic State’s defenses yesterday.
On Wednesday, the Syrian Arab Army continued where they left off the day before, liberating more territory in the vast Syrian Desert area that surrounds Palmyra’s western countryside.
According to a military source in east Homs, the Syrian Arab Army liberated Al-Buwaydah area, while also advancing to eastern Al-Bayarat after a fierce battle with the Islamic State this afternoon.
As a result of these gains, the Syrian Arab Army now finds themselves within 20km of Palmyra, marking their closest approach to the city since they were forced to withdraw in early December.
