The Islamist rebels are struggling to hold ground around the Syrian capital of Damascus lately; and it is becoming even more obvious that the war is taking a toll on their already depleted numbers, as the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their allies seize several sites that were considered impregnable 6 months ago.
On Saturday morning in the West Ghouta of rural Damascus, the Syrian Arab Army’s Special Forces and the National Defense Forces (NDF) seized over 20 buildings surrounding the Four Seasons Hotel in western Darayya, resulting in another depressing day for the Islamist rebels of Anjad Al-Sham.
Meanwhile, in the East Ghouta, the Syrian Arab Army’s 105th Brigade of the Republican Guard broke into the village of Al-Kaswa after an intense battle with the Islamist rebels of Jaysh Al-Islam (Army of Islam) and Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group).
In addition to the advance at Al-Kaswa, the Syrian Arab Army’s 416th Brigade of the Republican Guard seized 4 farms in Douma’s outskirts after a tug-of-war battle along the Damascus-Homs Highway on Saturday.
Following the loss of Marj Al-Sultan Military Airport and the death of Zahran Alloush in December, the Islamist rebels of Jaysh Al-Islam have been unable to recover and combat the government forces; this has paved the way for the Syrian Army’s advance in both the East Ghouta and the West Ghouta.
