DAMASCUS, SYRIA (5: 10) – Fierce clashes broke out deep the rebel-held Eastern Ghouta region as the Syrian government forces stormed the farms located between Hawsh Zarqaiyah and Hawsh Dawahra.
According to a military source, the Army troops managed to advance in the area despite the strong resistance from the Saudi-backed Jaish al-Islam.
The recent advance comes as infighting escalates between rival rebel groups elsewhere in the Islamic-insurgent bastion.
Jaish al-Islam, which vowed to expel the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda organization, overrun Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham positions in Al-Ashary Farms area, seizing a 57mm gun and killing a number of them.
The HTS – formerly known as al0Nusra Front – sought help from Faylaq al-Rahman; another powerful rebel group vying with Jaish al-Islam for control in the Eastern Ghouta.
Despite its forme pledge to distance itself from the infighting, Faylaq al-Rahman launched a counter-attack against Jaish al-Islam in Al-Ashary Farms area, forcing them to retreat. The clashes killed and injured scores of both warring parties.
