BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:20 P.M.) – “I believe that the Sochi congress will help us move forward and prevent the US from realising its tactical goals” National Syrian Council Secretary Khaled al-Abbud said in an interview in Sochi, Sunday, on the sidelines of the Syrian National Dialogue Congress.
“We understand that they would like to achieve a series of tactical goals to realise their ambitions in the region. I believe that Sochi will prevent that from happening,” he added.
“If Sochi can become a national platform, not just a platform where more contradictions arise, then it will be productive. If negotiations in Sochi are similar to the Geneva process, then it will not be useful,” Fateh Jamus, Leader of Coalition for Peaceful Changes, said.
“We will fight to the end to prevent the country from dividing. We came here to reach a political resolution,” Tariq Al-Ahmad, member of the Political Department of the Socio-Nationalist Syrian Opposition Party, said.
The Syrian National Dialogue Congress is set take place between January 29 and 30. Around 1,600 delegates representing a wide range of Syria’s political forces have been invited to participate in the congress.
The intention to hold the congress talks in Sochi, was announced on December during a meeting of the Syrian ceasefire guarantor countries, including Russia, Iran and Turkey.
