The wife of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Asma, has reportedly started treatment for a malignant breast tumour, according to Syrian President Media platforms and Syrian state media SANA on Wednesday.
A photo released by the Syrian presidency and SANA shows the First Lady attached to an IV line, seemingly in a hospital room. She is accompanied by her husband.
A statement which was published alongside the photo reads, “Asma al-Assad begins the first stage of treatment for a malignant tumor of the breast which was discovered early. The Presidency and its team wish Mrs Asma a speedy recovery.”
Forty-two-year-old Asma al-Assad married al-Assad in 2000, shortly after he became president. Born and raised in the UK, the dual British-Syrian national was an investment banker before she became First Lady of Syria.
