Sheikh Sayekh Abu Madi’am, leader against the evictions at an unrecognised Bedouin village in Israel, was sent to Maasiyahu prison in Ramla on Tuesday to serve his ten-month sentence.
A large number of supporters and journalists surrounded the 69-year-old Bedouin land rights activist as he arrived.
Abu Madi’am was convicted of illegally entering public land and trespassing for his insistence on fighting against evictions in the village of Al-Araqib.
The Bedouin village has reportedly been demolished and re-built over 130 times so far.
All of Abu Madi’am’s appeals against the relocation were rejected.
