Following a major Islamic State counter-offensive in western Raqqa, the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) Military High Command has seen itself forced to order a large-scale retreat along Ithriya-Raqqa road to avoid having its western Raqqa salient cut off.

While SAA commanders draw up new military plans, government troops now seem to have fully abandoned any hopes of liberating the Tabqa Airbase from the grips of the Islamic State.

It would have cut ISIS in half and cut them off from Turkey. It was worth a try and it was only about a 40k advance, much closer than the Palmyra to Deir Ezzor drive which is about twice that.

Keep what ya have and focus on other fronts for the time being anyway. Especially Aleppo, Latakia, and East Ghouta.

aside from taking the kuweires airbase, the saa has not achieved any strategic objective, not latakia, not hama, not damascus, not deir ezzor.

it’s become quite obvious that israel NEVER had anything to worry about from syria.

nearly is not accomplished. it’s been “nearly” cleansed for months, now. and kabane, the most strategically significant location is latakia, is NOT nearly taken.

Principle of communicating vessels : nonetheless Fallujah has fallen but the iraqis advance to Qaïm is simply expelling the daeshbags from all the border area, thus permitting redeployments to Tabqa and, as now they can be sure that they are doomed, the energy of despair and the fact of being back to the wall will push them to try very risky things which may sometimes work. SAA+Desert Hawks weren’t in so very big numbers, especially if you compare to the iraqi force which attacked Fallujah. Once again, if SyAAF had equiped even 2nd hand 30 to 50y old cargo planes… Read more »
