In a move seemingly aimed at expelling the Syrian Government from northeastern Syria, the People’s Protection Units (YPG) have made a string of advances inside Hasakah city during urban clashes with the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) over the past few days.
Two government enclaves currently persist in Hasakah province, one in Hasakah city and one in its neighbouring city of Qamishli. If these are fully captured by the YPG and aligned factions, this will allow Kurdish parties to establish their very own ‘Rojava’ region, a name synonymous with Syrian Kurdistan.
The SAA and YPG are otherwise considered staunch opponents of ISIS – therefore, internal clashes between the sides will in theory serve to strengthen the Islamic State.
