There are approximately 10,000 members of the Al-Qaeda and Al-Nusra Front terrorist groups, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said Thursday.

“No one doubts… that al-Nusra and al-Qaeda are terrorists and that terrorists identified by the UN need to be defeated… Indeed, the estimates of the al-Qaeda, al-Nusra, whatever name they want to call themselves, are more of less around 10,000 of them plus families,” de Mistura told reporters.

He also expressed his readiness to cooperate with the Syrian government to ensure the safe evacuation of civilians from the Idlib province.

“I am once again prepared, personally and physically, to get involved… with the government cooperation… to ensure such temporary [humanitarian] corridors would be feasible and guaranteed for the people so they can then return to their own places untouched,” the UN Special Envoy added.

Idlib province is one of Syria’s de-escalation zones and a remaining stronghold of insurgency in the war-torn country.

All indicators tend to the Saudis having stopped it all about end 2016, early 2017 since at the same time, Qatar publicly said that since Saudis were pulling out, they’d compensate the lack of funding. Considering all formerly Saudi-backed groups have cut salaries and al-Jubeir totally stopped his “Assad must go” rhetoric since, adding to the fact they seriously isolated Qatar a little later, it’s obvious the Saudis finally understood they were wrong and then pulled out, hopefully!

There are far more than 10k terrorists : Qatar+Turkey backed al-Zenki + allies. About 12-13k ISIS etc etc. More serious estimations point no less than 75,000 terrorists in Idlib, some go up to 100,000… Russian AF alone took out 86,000 terrorists in 3 years… This means that SDF and CJTF/OIR will have to help SAA, RuAF and SyAAF and Turkish malign actions will have to be prevented through the western channel which moreover is the only one able to provide the money necessary to rebuild Syria. Won’t happen if Assad doesn’t cuts ties with Khamenei and Nasrallah and doesn’t opts… Read more »
