BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:25 A.M.) – Reports are coming in from a number of sources claiming that the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have achieved a significant advance against ISIS in southwestern Raqqa city.
The reports say that the SDF captured the neighborhood of Yarmouk from ISIS. One Kurdish media source claims that sixteen fighters belonging to the jihadist group were killed as a result of the final clashes for the neighborhood. Al-Masdar News has no way of clarifying this claim.
In previous weeks, the SDF has invested much into advancing against ISIS in the southeastern part of Raqqa where several days ago it managed to fight its way into the Old City area.
The neighborhood of Yarmouk was entered into by SDF forces two weeks ago whose offensive momentum at the time made it seem as if the area would fall within a day. In the event, the SDF advance got bogged down as the Islamic State’s defenses quickly solidified.
If the reports are true, then it appears that the SDF has renewed its drive towards the centre of Raqqa from the western direction and that this is perhaps in supplementation to eastern push.
