The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) continued their operation to reclaim the last self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) enclave in the Syrian village of Baghouz on Sunday.
Footage from the area captures the exchange of gunfire and shelling.
According to the SDF, 29 IS militants were killed and “a large quantity of weapons and ammunition” was seized from IS on Sunday.
The SDF have battled IS fighters holed up in Baghouz for weeks. On March 9, the SDF launched fresh attacks on IS positions, resulting in the surrender of around 4,000 IS militants and their family members.
SDF spokesperson Kino Gabriel said on Sunday that “the number of families of the terrorists who surrendered to our forces is 29,600 people.” Without specifying the time and place, Gabriel added that “520” were captured during special SDF operations.
Some 5,000 IS militants and their family members are still believed to be in Baghouz, based on the SDF reports and intelligence acquired from captured IS fighters.
