The Muawiyas school in downtown Daraa was reduced to rubble after the Hayyat Tahrir al-Sham rebel coalition launched a homemade ‘Omar rocket’ on the Al-Manshiyah district.
The Al-Manshiyah district has been fought over since Hayyat Tahrir al-Sham and Southern Front launched their joint ‘Death rather than humiliation’ offensive on February 12.
According to the UN, over 10,000 people have fled the provincial capital of Daraa due to the renewed clashes. Rebel forces have deployed suicide bombers on numerous occasions although gains inside the Al-Manshiyah district have been modest so far.
If one is to believe Hayyat Tahrir al-Sham that claimed responsibility for the surface-to-surface ballistic missile attack on Friday afternoon, the Muawiyas school was transformed into a military fortification by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) prior to its destruction.
Meanwhile, the Russian Navy fired multiple cruise missiles upon gun positions held by Hayyat Tahrir al-Sham in retaliation. According to Al-Masdar News field correspondent Majd Fahd, the SAA’s 5th Armored Division requested the missile attack and later gave the Russian Navy the coordinates for suspected combatant buildings to strike.
