DAMASCUS, SYRIA (7:05 P.M.) – All the stockpiles of sarin chemical agent in Russia have been liquidated, Russian Interfax agency reported citing Colonel General Valery Kapashin, head of the Federal Agency on safe keeping and liquidation of chemical weapons.
“Following commitments to the international Chemical Weapons Convention and the federal programme on liquidation of chemical weapons in the Russian Federation, we have completely eradicated stockpiles of sarin chemical agent,” he said on Monday.
The last sarin container was liquidated at 1:00 A.M. (Moscow time). Kapashin added that previously Russia destroyed all the stockpiles of yperite and soman.
He also underlined that overall Russia has eradicated 98,9% of its chemical weapon stockpiles so far, that is 39,528 tons out of 40,000.
Eradication of chemical weapons arsenal in Russia is expected to be completed by autumn this year.
