BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:05 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army cleared the final stretch of IS-held highway between the cities of Palmyra and Deir ez-Zor, Sunday, as government forces continue to make ground against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL).
The road is seen as key strategic territory in the fight against IS.
Fighting took place to the south-west of Deir ez-Zor, on a stretch of road leading from Al-Malha. SAA units were able to link up with government troops at the city’s Panorama entrance.
The entire 200 km long (125 mile) highway is now in government hands. The gain comes just days after coalition forces broke the IS siege of Deir ez-Zor.
