Forces of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) continued to their offensive to gain control of Deir ez-Zor on Wednesday, as the battle for the area continues between the SAA and the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants.

Backed by air support by Syrian and Russian air forces, the SAA targeted the IS positions using tanks and machine guns.

SAA reportedly managed to advance towards eastern Palmyra’s ‘Arak Gas Field, a strategic area held by IS, aiming to end the two year siege of Deir Ez-Zor.

The ‘Arak Gas Field is an imperative site located along the Palmyra-Deir Ezzor Highway; its capture would put the Syrian Arab Army in position to ISIL stronghold of Sukhnah.
