BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:00 P.M.) – The proposal for the long-term deployment of the Russian Aerospace Forces in Syria has been approved by the upper house of the Federal Assembly of Russia.
The now in-effect protocol, bilaterally agreed on by the governments of the Russian Federation and the Syrian Arab Republic, will grant the Russian air group in Syria a 49-year deployment period via permanent bases within the country.
Outlined in the protocol includes the expectation of Syrian government forces take measures to protect Russian bases stationed within the Arab republic and the responsibilities of Russian military forces to maintain law and order throughout Syria, carry out internal security inside their bases as well as establish adequate air defenses around their military infrastructures.
The protocol gives the Russian military forces in Syria the right to continue to carry out comprehensive activities throughout the country as granted to them by the Damascus government.
The 49-year lease also has the option for being extended by another 25 years.
