(TASS) The information that streets in the Syrian city of Aleppo are full of dead bodies is a blatant lie, Head of the Main Operations Department of Russia’s General Staff Lieutenant-General Sergei Rudskoi said on Friday.
“A new information campaign is gaining momentum. Some Western politicians are saying about allegedly mass victims among civilians during the operation for the Aleppo liberation. According to them, the city’s streets are full of corpses while thousands of residents are still hiding in basements. I can say with all the responsibility that this information is a blatant lie,” the general said.
Officers of Russia’s Center for the Reconciliation of the Warring Sides in Syria and representatives of the International Red Cross Committee entered together with Syrian servicemen the Aleppo districts liberated from militants “but found no corpses there,” Rudskoi said.
“Besides, unmanned aerial vehicles were broadcasting in real time to the entire world. Our people are working on the ground and we’re receiving first-hand information rather than information from social networks and militants’ websites,” the general said.
The Syrian troops and people’s militia have switched to an offensive in the east of Aleppo since November. Russia’s Center for the Reconciliation of the Warring Sides in Syria announced on Friday about the completion of the Syrian army’s operation for the liberation of Aleppo’s eastern quarters that had been under militants’ control.
According to the Center, the army is now liquidating the pockets of resistance of “radical and irreconcilable gangs,” which have remained in separate districts.
As the Russian General Staff reported on Thursday, a total of 105 residential quarters on an area of 78.5 square kilometers were fully liberated from militants.
A total of over 900 militants have been eliminated and dozens of pieces of heavy armament and military hardware have been destroyed.
