BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:45 P.M.) – Russian warships off the coast of the Mediterranean Sea carried out a series of cruise missile strikes on the jihadist rebel positions in the western countryside of the Idlib Governorate.

According to reports from Latakia, the Russian warhships fired several cruise missiles towards the positions of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham and the Turkestan Islamic Party in the Jisr Al-Shughour countryside.

This cruise missile attack by the Russian Navy comes just 24 hours after the jihadist rebels attacked the large city of Masyaf in the western countryside of the Hama Governorate.

At least seven civilians were killed during the jihadist attack on Masyaf, including two nurses that were working at the National Hospital.

The Syrian and Russian armed forces responded to the attack with a non-barrage of missiles on the positions of the jihadist and Turkish-backed rebels.

Not really the best choice : I don’t know about any naval cruise missile under $1.4M, Russian ones tend to be even more expensive as they are supersonic while a 925kg GBU-10 Paveway-II, on of the oldest laser guided bombs around only costs about $15-20k and a basic JDAM kit costs $25k. These are the less advanced around but you will replace the target by a 30m diameter crater. I have no idea of the price for the Russian KAB-1500 but it’s likely to do a 40m diameter crater and it’s surely way less costly than a Kalibr. At $32k/hour… Read more »

Maybe the real purpose was to warn the US that Russia is becoming increasingly angry and fed up with the US’s continuing use and protection of jihadist terrorists as proxy troops in it’s illegal war in Syria and the use of the missiles was simply to point out that Russia has the technology to (quite probably) kick the US’s b**t if a direct conflict were to actually take place.

Indeed, it is unlikely that the Russians wasted even any of their regular, cheap, non-supersonic cruise missiles on basic canon-fodder head chopper mercs. Far more likely is that they just used the head chopper restlessness as an excuse to neutralize the CIA/MI6 C&C operators who are responsible for the annoyance drone attacks against Russia’s airbase. Now you can expect two things: 1) Another “helicopter accident” in Hawaii or some such as a cover story for why these guys are not coming home ever again, and 2) the Yanks and Limeys gnashing their teeth in rage and manufacturing another pretense for… Read more »
