BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:20 P.M.) – The Russian Aerospace Forces unleashed a series of airstrikes over the northwestern region of Syria on Saturday, as their warplanes struck the headquarters of a foreigner-led jihadist group in the Latakia Governorate.
According to a report from the Latakia Governorate on Saturday, the Russian Aerospace Force began the day by carrying out reconnaissance flights over the Jisr Al-Shughour area and Jabal Al-Zawiya region of Idlib.
The Russian Aerospace Forces would follow up these reconnaissance missions with a series of airstrikes over the key town of Kabani, which has become the headquarters of the foreigner-led Turkestan Islamic Party in the Latakia Governorate.
It should be pointed out that the town of Kabani has been the scene of several battles in the past, as the Syrian Arab Army has repeatedly attempted to capture this mountaintop stronghold of the jihadist rebels in the Latakia Governorate.
Following the Russian airstrikes, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and jihadist rebels in the southern countryside of the Idlib Governorate traded attacks along the Jabal Al-Zawiya front-lines.
The Jabal Al-Zawiya region has witnessed mutual exchanges of hostilities over the past few months; however, neither side has made an attempt to advance their positions, despite the previous year’s violence.
