BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:30 A.M.) – The Russian military reportedly deployed to the Dumayr Airbase in the northeastern countryside of Damascus on Tuesday to increase the security around the Syrian capital.

While Russian advisers were already present at this airbase in east Damascus, the recent influx of military personnel to the Dumayr Plain is likely to coincide with the U.S. Air Force’s recent attack on the Shayrat Airport in southeast Homs.

The Dumayr Airbase is an imperative installation that has come attack by the Islamic State and rebel forces on numerous occasions in the past; its proximity to the Syrian capital makes it an integral site for the government.

Since the emergence of the Islamic State forces in the eastern slopes of the Qalamoun Mountains, the Syrian Arab Army and rebel units in the area have agreed to a non-aggression pact; this allows them to focus on the terrorist group and secure their territory.
