BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:40 P.M.) – Russian and Syrian warplanes are flying over the southwestern countryside of the Idlib Governorate, tonight, after the jihadist rebels attempted to bomb the Hmeimim Airport with an attack drone.
According to a military report from northeast Latakia, the warplanes flew over the Jisr Al-Shughour District, which is where a large number of jihadist rebels are currently positioned.
Both the Turkestan Islamic Party (TIP) and Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham are active in the Jisr Al-Shughour countryside; they are believed to be behind the attempted attack on the Hmeimim Airbase.
While no airstrikes have been launched, it is very likely that the warplanes are collecting information on the launching sites before attacking from the air or ground.
Recently, the Jisr Al-Shughour countryside has witnessed an increase in hostilities after the jihadist rebels launched a surprise attack against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) near the key town of Al-Sirmaniyah.
This attack by jihadist rebels on a Syrian Arab Army camp along the Hama-Latakia axis resulted in the death of 23 soldiers.
Since the attack, the Syrian Army has been pounding the jihadist defenses in the Al-Ghaab Plain; this has prompted the jihadist rebels to respond with several missile and artillery strikes in this region.
