BEIRUT, LEBANON (10:10 A.M.) – Leaders of the Syrian opposition groups held a separate press conference on the country’s crisis settlement, during the Syrian National Dialogue Congress, in the Russian Black Sea resort city on Tuesday.
President of the Syrian Opposition ‘Astana Platform’ Randa Kassis said expressed readiness to “keep on trying” to “devise a new constitution and start a new political process, even if it takes longer than we expected.”
She went on to say that “this is just a beginning,” adding “we have to carry on, even if we do not get what we want today. It is a beginning.”
Chairperson of the Syrian Opposition ‘Moscow Group’ Qadri Jamil argued that the Russian military involvement in Syria “did not protect Assad, it protected the Syrian country from collapsing.
If Syria collapsed, there would not have been any regime, any regulation at all, Assad or not. And we see what is happening in Iraq and Libya.”
“Why do they always state in Western media that Russia is protecting Bashar Al-Assad? It just so happened that during this historical point Bashar Al-Assad was the president of the Syrian Arab Republic – not the Syrian regime but the country of Syria. Syria as a country was at risk of collapsing,” added Jamil.
The Syrian National Dialogue Congress took place between January 29 and 30. Around 1,600 delegates representing the entire spectrum of Syria’s political, civil and ethno-confessional forces have participated in the congress.
The initiative to hold the congress was announced at a December meeting of the Syrian ceasefire guarantor nations, including Russia, Iran and Turkey.
