Russian Tupolev Tu-22 M3 bombers struck several militant targets in the Syrian province of Deir-ez-Zor, Friday, destroying ammunition and arms warehouses belonging to the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL), Russia’s Ministry of Defence reported.

The Russian Air Force provided necessary air coverage for the advancing Syrian Arab Army (SAA) units in Deir Ezzor, as they attempt to lift the one month long siege on the Military Airport.

According to a military source in Deir Ezzor, the Syrian Arab Army is on the cusp of liberating the provincial cemetery and landfill after several large attacks these last few days.

In late December, the Islamic State launched a massive offensive in Deir Ezzor that was geared to besiege the military airport; this attack would prove successful as they forced the Syrian Arab Army to withdraw from several sites.
