The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) mobilized hundreds of fighters to restart their offensive operations in southwest Deir Ezzor on Monday morning; however, their hopes of capturing Jabal Thardeh were quickly brought to an end after Russian fighter jets pulverized their positions near this strategic mountaintop.
According to a field source at the Deir Ezzor Military Airport, ISIS was preparing to attack the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) defenses at the southwestern perimeter of Jabal Thardeh, until Russian fighter jets swarmed the Thayyem Valley and killed several terrorist combatants before they could reach their intended destination
In addition to their airstrikes at the Thayyem Valley, the Russian Air Force pounded an Islamic State gathering near the Panorama Roundabout, destroying a large number of enemy vehicles before retiring to the T-4 Military Airport in the east Homs countryside.
The Russian Air Force recently increased their presence in eastern Syria after a number of failed offensives by the Islamic State in the month of June.
The Islamic State’s access to the International Highway has been a major issue in eastern Syria; especially, since it flows through the ancient city of Palmyra (Tadmur).
Obstructint the Islamic State’s access to this imperative roadway in eastern Syria has been incredibly important to the Russian military; so much so, that they have carried out several raids in the vast Syrian Desert.
