BEIRUT, LEBANON (6:30 A.M.) – On Wednesday afternoon, the Russian Air Force unleashed a massive assault near the jihadist-held city of Idlib.
Led by their Sukhoi jets, the Russian Air Force targeted several sites under the control of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham, including the Idlib Central Prison and a jihadist weapons warehouse.
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced shortly after the airstrikes that their warplanes destroyed a Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham weapons and ammunition depot.
They would add that their airstrikes on the provincial capital of Idlib were coordinated with their Turkish allies on Wednesday afternoon.
The Russian Air Force has bombed the Idlib Governorate at least twice in the last 48 hours, marking the first time this year that they have conducted airstrikes on consecutive days.
These Russian airstrikes were also conducted in conjunction with a Syrian Arab Army (SAA) attack on Idlib city, which lasted for a short while on Wednesday.
With the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) preparing to launch a large scale offensive in southern Idlib and northern Hama, the Russian Air Force has stepped up their operations against groups like Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham and the Turkestan Islamic Party.
The Russian military considers both Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham and the Turkestan Islamic Party as terrorist groups that must not be allowed to have any role in Syria’s future.
