Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said today that Russian and Syrian militaries are launching a wide-scale military operation against Islamist militants in Homs and Idlib provinces of Syria.
“Today at 10:30 and 11:00 we launched a large-scale operation against the positions of Islamic State and Al-Nusra [terrorist groups] in the provinces of Idlib and Homs,” Shoigu said at a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the top leadership of the Russian Armed Forces.
The Russian minister confirmed that the first barrage of Caliber missiles was launched from frigate “Admiral Grigorovich”, currently positioned off the Syrian coast.
The missile attack carried out earlier today comes as part of a wider military operation which will target ‘terrorist positions’ in the war-torn country.
The operation also involves the aircraft carrier “Admiral Kuznetsov”, where Sukhoi Su-33 fighter jets took off and conducted airstrikes against the jihadi groups.
