BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:20 P.M.) – The Russian Federation and Turkish regime are currently in talks about reopening the strategic highway from Latakia city to Gaziantep, a source told Al-Masdar News this afternoon.
According to the source, the Russian and Turkish officials are discussing security measures between the Idlib and Aleppo governorates, as these two provinces have several entities controlling different parts of them.
The source said that one of the possibilities is the Turkish military’s deployment along the rebel-held parts of the highway in order to ensure the safety of people traveling along the roadway.
Due to the ongoing war, the Latakia and Tartous governorates have become two of Syria’s most densely populated provinces, which makes trade with Turkey even more imperative because of its proximity.
Prior to the war, Turkey was an integral trade partner with Syria; however, after years of conflict, both countries still do not have any diplomatic ties.
Russia is now mediating between the two countries in order to allow merchants to resume their inter-border trade and commerce.
