The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on Thursday that they are “ready” to support a weekly 48 hour ceasefire that would allow for humanitarian aid to reach the besieged areas of the Aleppo Governorate.
Originally proposed by the Stefan de Mistura, the 48 hour ceasefire will be conducted every week in Aleppo City and it will be monitored by U.N. employees.
These U.N. employees will be charged with transporting necessities to civilians in Aleppo City, including food, water, and medical aid.
While Russia has agreed to this 48 hour ceasefire, the Syrian opposition groups, including their hardline jihadist forces, have not accepted this proposal from the U.N.
The previous daily 3 hour ceasefire never came to fruition, as both sides exchanged violent offensives that same week.
