The Syrian Arab Army’s 104th Airborne Brigade of the Republican Guard is in the final stages of capturing Sakr Island (Haweeja Sakr) in the Deir Ezzor Governorate after advancing to the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham’s (ISIS) stronghold at Central Park. Artillery shells and gunfire from Sakr Island can be heard throughout the day and night in the Deir Ezzor District, where civilians attempt to maintain normalcy despite the looming danger nearby.
ISIS has suffered a significant amount of casualties over the last few weeks in the Ezzor Governorate due to intense firefights with 104th Brigade and the prevalent air raids by the Syrian Air Force and Anti-ISIS Coalition. According to a military source, over 40 ISIS fighters were killed over the weekend and another 20 surrendered to security forces at Sakr Island alone, with another 30 plus killed on the outskirts of the city.
