On Monday morning, unidentified assailants opened fire from an automatic weapon in the center of Alma-Ata near the local police station. According to the police, there were at least two criminals, one of whom was shot dead after he resisted arrest.
Also, according to some sources, gunmen opened fire in other districts of the former capital of Kazakhstan.
Two police officers were killed as a result of the shooting, several others are wounded.
Police forces have blocked several streets in the city center. Bystanders of the shooting were sheltered by law enforcers in the nearby buildings.
As of now, a counter-terrorism operation is underway in Alma-Ata.
