BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:30 A.M.) – Qatar cannot become a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization because the alliance was originally created for the countries of Europe and North America, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg told journalists on Thursday.
“The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is an organization for the countries of Europe and North America; it is written in our charter,” Stoltenberg said, noting that Qatar is at the same time a valuable partner of the alliance in the region.
Stoltenberg’s comments come just a day after Qatar expressed interest in joining this alliance.
With its year-long tiff with its Gulf neighbors, particularly Saudi Arabia , Qatar is looking for a new alliance to help protect its borders.
