Protests took place in Stockholm (01/05/2016) against Al Nimr’s execution that occurred in Saudi Arabia. Protesters took to the streets all over the world to demonstrate against the recent execution of the prominent Shiite cleric Al Nimr and Sweden was no exception. The Swedish capital of Stockholm saw their own demonstrations happening in Sergtorg (near the Central Train Station). This protest happened a few days after the execution of that cleric and was organized by some local human rights organizations and some prominent leaders from the local Shi’ite community.

“Hans sista ord var Labayka ya husain” (his last words were: “We serve you, Hussain”) spoke one of the protest organizers through a microphone. Dozens of protesters in Stockholm braved the cold weather to protest against Saudi Arabia’s brutality against a peaceful objector whose execution by the Saudi regime on charges of terrorism has only increased tensions in the Middle East. The Swedish protesters compared Saudi Arabia to ISIS and denounced the cleric’s execution. The protestors came from different backgrounds as Sweden hosts several large diaspora communities from Middle Eastern countries.

While in the short term these protests may not have an impact, it can be assured that this action by Saudi Arabia will only heighten tensions and benefit extremist groups like ISIS who use this kind of actions to their advantage. As the war in Iraq against ISIS drags on into another year, many Iraqis living in Sweden want action against the Saudi government whom they view as responsible for the misery in their country.
The recent execution will only heighten the tensions and the sense of hopelessness among the Shi’ites who see themselves as being attacked on all fronts, especially when considering the attacks on Yemen and Nigeria, too.

Its a shame they don’t come out more often when Saudi executes people including Shite’s instead for just one cleric I think it sends a bad message stating that clerics are some what more important than the ‘common folk’.
