The prominent commander of the Quds Force (IRGC wing), Major General Qassem Suleimani, asserted on Saturday that Iran will only assist the Iraqis against the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS), if the country’s religious leadership approves.
According to Hezbollah’s media wing “Al-Manar“, General Suleimani stated that Iran will act when Iraq’s religious community calls on them.
“We will act (against the terrorists in Iraq) when Iraq’s Muslim religious reference, Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Ali al-Sistani, says there is a political and international need.”
He added that the Islamic Republic does not need to intervene in Iraq as long as Grand Ayatollah Sayyed al-Sistani is present in the country.
This statement from the Iranian general comes just two days after Saudi Foreign Minister, ‘Adel Al-Jubeir, alleged that Iran is interfering in Iraq’s internal affairs.
In regards to Yemen, the Quds Force commander described Saudi Arabia’s inhuman aggression against the civilian population as “mere madness.”
General Suleimani claimed that the Houthis, Saleh loyalists, and the Yemeni Republican Guard have more than one million fighters.
