BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:00 P.M.) – The Pentagon has said that US soldiers operating illegally in Syria are playing a new role in Syria by attempting to deter violence between Turkey and its allied forces, and with US supported Kurdish-led forces.
In addition to this role, the US is also advising the local Arab and Kurdish fighters, collectively known as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), in their fight against ISIS.
A spokesman, Navy Capt. Jeff Davis, said that the American military presence was there to reassure Ankara that the SDF-held town of Manbij is under the control of a predominantly Arab force, and not of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, in which Turkey prescribes as a terrorist organization.
Davis emphasized that this was the new role of the US. The US under the administration of Barack Obama always found it difficult to find a purpose to intervene in the Syrian conflict.
