BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:45 P.M.) – A large number of jihadist rebels are being transferred from the Idlib Governorate to nearby Latakia as they prepare to face off against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the Jabal Al-Akrad region.
In a statement on Thursday, the head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation in Syria, Alexei Pachin, said that least 500 terrorists have been transferred from Idlib to Latakia already, pointing out that more than 3,500 armed men from the organization of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham are planning to redeploy there.
According to his statement, while Russia “continues to see the reduction of escalation in the Idlib region, the terrorists are still rearranging themselves. They have transferred at least 500 gunmen from the province of Idlib to the province of Latakia, most of whom came from foreign countries.”
This move by Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham and the Turkestan Islamic Party comes at the same time that the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their allies deploy several units of reinforcements to the southern outskirts of Kabani.
The town of Kabani is currently a high priority for the Syrian Army’s High Command, as it is located on one of the highest points in the Latakia Governorate.
Lastly, Kabani overlooks much of the Al-Ghaab Plain’s northern region; if captured, they will have a clear path to the strategic city of Jisr Al-Shughour in the Idlib Governorate.
